Improve your Golf Swing!

Because Pilates increases flexibility without sacrificing strength, golfers find they can drive the ball farther according to Power Golf Pilates’ Rick Nielsen.  Rick is the only PGA professional in the country who is also a Certified Pilates Instructor.

ricknielsen“Golfers are always looking to hit the ball farther,” states Rick.  “World class players are now getting 300+ yards with their driver.  Most golfers could increase their distance by improving the flexibility in the upper body.”

Increased range of motion and flexibility in the trunk allows a golfer to rotate more on the backswing, the downswing and the follow-through, which gives the swing more power.  Rick uses Pilates moves such as the Spine Twist and the Saw on the mat and Mermaid and Chest Expansion on the Reformer to increase flexibility in his clients safely.

World class golfers such as Tiger Woods and Annika Sorenson practice Pilates and the power in Woods’ swing has been linked to his ability to rotate his upper body while maintaining proper alignment.

In the next few weeks, we’ll continue to breakdown the golf swing into its many components and provide exercises you can do at home.  In the meantime, check out the Pilates on Fifth video podcast and the “Morning Low Back Care” workout on UltimatePilatesWorkouts.com.

Rick teaches Pilates and Golf at Power Golf Pilates located conveniently in midtown and on Randall’s Island.
